Bed Bug Behavior — More Than Just Biting

Bed bugs have a scientific name; they are called “Cimex lectularius.” These pests are pretty tiny, which makes it difficult to spot them until they are looked at very closely. They come under the category of nocturnal animals as they are most active at night. In Idaho, bed bugs can be easily seen and can even infest homes.

They are known for their hitchhiking; they can easily stick to your clothes or shopping bags and make their way inside your home. They have developed resilience over time and have become quite adaptable to different environments. You will usually find them in bedding areas; however, they are not restricted to that area.

They can also be found in carpets or in other small spaces in your home. You need to know about their behavior and characteristics in order to have a better idea of how to deal with them.

Furthermore, it will not be easy to get rid of them as they are pretty small in size and can infest homes in large numbers. It is better you reach out to Hemi Pest Control Services to get them out of your house.

What should you know about their behavior

Their behavior can come out as intriguing to many. These little pests do not like to be around light sources and are mostly seen out during nighttime.

This helps them not to get caught, and they can easily feed on the host. They usually feed on human blood; however, they can also feed on different pets. Since they are adaptable, it is not easy to get rid of them once they enter your home.

How long is the duration for them to go without food?

They have excellent resilience, which makes them able to survive without having to feed on something for a long time. They can go for months without eating. This can be seen as their survival skill, which enables them to sustain themselves in uninhabited spaces.

They wait for their host to come back, and in the meantime, they remain hungry. They have a slow metabolism, which makes it easy for them to survive when they do not have food around for months.

What do you have to know about their hibernation rate?

They do not really hibernate, but they can remain inactive for a long time, especially during winter time. They might not be able to find food sources during cold weather, and therefore, they reduce their overall activity. If the temperature goes down below the freezing point, it becomes difficult for these pests to survive.

They can be killed in such cold temperatures. Thirty-two degrees Fahrenheit is what is required and has to be maintained to kill them. This needs to be done and maintained for at least 4 days.

Their metabolism also becomes slow during wintertime. Slowed-down metabolism helps these creatures conserve lots of energy, which allows them to survive longer.

Is there any odor that bed bugs leave behind?

These pests produce an odor, primarily when they infest large numbers of places. The smell is somewhat similar to that of berries. Bed bugs have scent glands that produce a certain kind of odor, and they use these glands to communicate with their other mates.

If there is any danger around, their other mates can get alert. You may also notice shredded skin around your bedding, or if you notice red-brown spots, that’s another sign. When they bite, they leave the area itchy, and you may also notice red spots.

Contact an exterminator to get help!

If you notice their infestation around your house, there is a possibility that they are living in large numbers. It might not be easy to get rid of them because of their size and other habits. There are several methods that you can use. However, if nothing works out, then it is better to get in touch with a pest control service.
